Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Turn your experience into a nationally recognised qualification. RPL assesses the skills and knowledge you've gained through work, previous study and life experience against the requirements of a qualification.
How RPL works
Instead of sitting through training on things you already know, you show an ATI assessor evidence of your skills. The assessor compares your evidence against each unit of competency. If you meet the requirements, you're awarded those units. If there are gaps, we'll offer targeted gap training so you can complete the qualification.
Is RPL right for you?
RPL may suit you if you:
- have worked in a related role and performed the tasks covered by the qualification
- have recent, current skills — generally within the last [CONFIRM: 3] years
- can provide evidence of your work, such as documents, references or work samples
- can name a supervisor, manager or client who can confirm your experience
Not sure? Talk to us before you apply. If full RPL isn't the best fit, a mix of RPL and training may get you there sooner.
The RPL process
- 1Enquiry — we confirm RPL is available for your qualification and explain the fees.
- 2Application and self-evaluation — you complete a self-assessment against the qualification.
- 3Interview — an assessor talks with you about your experience and asks questions.
- 4Practical demonstration — where a unit requires it, you show your skills in a real or simulated workplace.
- 5Evidence — you submit supporting documents.
- 6Gap training — if needed, you complete training for any skills not yet demonstrated.
- 7Outcome — when you're assessed as competent in all units, we issue your nationally recognised qualification or Statement of Attainment.
Evidence you can use
- Position descriptions, resumes and employer references
- Certificates, licences and training records
- Work samples — reports, photos, videos or project documents (with permission)
- Payslips or employment records showing time in the role
- Letters from supervisors or clients
- Performance reviews or portfolios
Already hold the same units? Ask about Credit Transfer
If you've already completed identical or equivalent units of competency with another RTO, you may be eligible for Credit Transfer instead of RPL. Provide a copy of your certificate or your USI transcript and we'll check it.
RPL questions
How much does RPL cost?
RPL fees vary by qualification and are shown on the RPL tab of each course page [CONFIRM]. We'll confirm the full cost with you before your assessment begins.
How long does RPL take?
Usually from a few weeks to a few months. It depends on how quickly you provide your evidence and whether gap training is needed.
Do I have to attend classes?
Generally no — RPL is assessment-based. You may need to attend a practical assessment or gap training.
Is RPL guaranteed?
No. RPL is an assessment, so the outcome depends on your evidence meeting the requirements of each unit.
Can I use Career Start funding for RPL?
[CONFIRM against Career Start program rules before answering.]
