This security course is for those who wish to apply for a Queensland Class 1 Security Licence with Functions – Unarmed and Crowd Controller.

That licence is used for work as an Unarmed Security Officer, Crowd Controller, or Monitoring Officer. Monitoring no longer requires additional training to add as a licence function.

On successful completion, participants will be issued with a Certificate with the following core units:

  10. CPPSEC2110Monitor and control individual and crowd behaviour to maintain security
  11. CPPSEC2111Apply security procedures to manage intoxicated persons

Participants must have sufficient skills to read, write and communicate in English.

Participants must also be physically fit, and able to perform defensive tactic techniques, and bend/kneel for at least 2 minutes to perform CPR.

Participants must also have access to a reliable computer with email and internet access to complete the pre-course online training.

Licence & Regulatory Requirements

All Queensland Security Licenses are administered by the Office of Fair Trading .

All participants are encouraged to read through the requirements of a QLD Security Licence Application , as there is additional requirements & fees payable to Office of Fair Trading.

For example, participants must be over the age of 18, must be a fit and proper person, cannot have had any Disqualifying Offences under the criminal code in the last 10 years.

Security Licensing Fees

Total fee for first year is $625.05 due to mandatory fingerprinting and police check.

A mandatory criminal history check must be completed on all applications if one has not been conducted by the Office of Fair Trading within the last 6 months. Fee: $47.35 per person.

A mandatory fingerprinting fee is payable when submitting your original application. Fee: $113.30 per person.

Multiple Function (Unrestricted)

  • $464.40 for 1 year
  • $936.20 for 3 years

Processing time

The processing time for security licence applications is 4 to 6 weeks as advised by the Office of Fair Trading.

Licensing bodies (for example the Office of Fair Trading) issue licences. ATI issues the training. Completing this course does not guarantee a licence or a job.

Pre-course Work: Complete approximately 30 hours of online, self-paced training, depending on your experience and computer skills. This includes reading, watching videos, and completing quizzes and exams. The online portion must be finished before attending the face-to-face training.

Face-to-Face Training: Attend 6 days of in-person sessions (8:30am-4:30pm, totalling 48 hours). Your trainer will review key content, lead activities, case scenarios, and practical exercises, and you will complete closed-book exams.

QLD Government Funding Available – Career Start Program

Australian Training Institute is an approved Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) of the Queensland Government Career Start Program. Eligible Queensland residents may access a government subsidy toward the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations, reducing the overall course cost.

The Queensland Government subsidises part of the qualification fee, with students required to contribute a co-contribution amount.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows you to have your existing skills, knowledge, and industry experience assessed against the requirements of this qualification. This pathway is suitable for individuals who already work in the industry or have completed relevant training and wish to obtain a nationally recognised qualification.

The $150 Assessment Fee is a non-refundable fee that covers the initial review and assessment of your RPL application and supporting evidence. This fee is payable after your application has been reviewed and deemed suitable to proceed.

This qualification is the usual training for a Queensland Class 1 Security Licence application with Unarmed and Crowd Controller functions. The Office of Fair Trading issues the licence. Australian Training Institute issues the training. Completing the course does not guarantee a licence or a job.

The live course page names these employment functions on that licence:

  • Unarmed Security Officer Personal guards, patrols or watches another person’s property, without a guard dog or weapon. This includes in-house security, loss prevention officers and security gate officers.
  • Crowd Controller Keeps order at a public place. Crowd controllers screen entry, monitor or control behaviour while inside, and remove people for bad behaviour.
  • Monitoring Officer Monitoring no longer requires additional training in order to be added as a function to your security licence.
